If you are using an Android device, or an iPhone 4, 4s, 5, or 5c:
Pacer uses a simple formula to estimate your distance traveled. That formula is:
[Your Number of Steps] x [Your Estimated Step Length] = [Estimated Distance Traveled]
Your step length can be set in your Pacer's settings. If you have not set your step length, Pacer estimates your step length to be 0.4 x your height. If you have not set your height either, Pacer assumes an average height of 165cm.
If you are using an iPhone 5s, 6/Plus or 6s/Plus:
These devices have a built-in motion sensor that combines your motion activity data and calibrations from your device's location services (for example, GPS signal) to estimate your distance traveled. You do not need to set your step length on these devices.
You can help your device calibrate your distance estimation over time:
- Go to your iPhone's Settings
- Look for Privacy
- Look for "Location Services"
- Scroll all the way to the bottom until you find "System Services"
- Make sure that "Motion Calibration & Distance" is turned "ON"
